Let Valentine’s Day Remind You of All the Ways Your Smile and Your Heart Are Connected

Valentine’s Day is a time to spend with that one person you treasure most in the world. A time when you can relax, unwind, and remind each other of your love for each other.

It’s also a time when the connection between your head and your heart comes into sharper focus, for, as so many know all too well, when you’re with someone you love, you can’t help smiling.

But if our conception of hearts is strongly tied to images of decorative pink and red hearts, there’s another smile-heart connection that’s even more vital, and that’s the connection between your oral health and your heart health. Studies have shown that the health of your smile is inextricably linked to the health of your heart and your overall wellbeing. Which is why it’s so important to see me at my Erlanger office every six months for a regular checkup.

But in the meantime, with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, we want to leave you with this beautiful picture of your heart and your smile working together to help you share yourself with that one person you’re closest too.

We hope everyone enjoys their special day. Let us know how you’ll be spending yours in the comments section below.

How Does Music Brighten Your Life and Make You Smile?

Music has enormous power.

But if a song on the radio or your iPod has ever turned a sad day into a happy one, you already know this. First, you might feel yourself begin to move a little to the music. Then, you start to smile just a little. The next thing you know, your smile’s gotten bigger and you’re even singing along. It’s almost like your sadness has evaporated, like rain after a storm.

That’s the kind of power that music has.

But music can also teach us, whether we’re children or adults, and it can bring friends and family together.

One song I’ve been listening to lately that is just packed with emotion is “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. If you’ve never heard it, click on the video below to see the music video. (more…)

What Goals Are You Setting for the New Year?

We’re almost halfway through January, but it’s not too late to think about setting goals for the New Year. Maybe your goal is to eat right, exercise every day, or just to smile more. Regardless of what you’re aiming for, I know someone who can help you get there.

Janine Elias is a life coach with over decades of experience. She’s committed to helping others achieve their dreams. Here are three tips from her that have already helped me this year:

  1. Know what your end result is. Why are you setting this goal or aiming for this target and what is achieving x,y, or z going to do for you, or what are you going to get out of it?
  2. Create a definitive plan. Be clear of “what” you want and begin putting together “how” you’re going to get it. Make sure you give yourself a timeline and a specific date to create urgency, otherwise it will just be that “thing” you will get to “someday.”
  3. Take action! Knowing what you want and planning how to get it is of major importance but it will stop there if you don’t take daily, weekly, monthly, and/or yearly steps to “get” what you want.

It can be so easy to lose sight of what’s important to you when you start thinking about all the little details. By taking life one step at a time, though, what seemed hard at first suddenly becomes possible in a way you thought it never could be. And by achieving your goals, you’ve found one of the best ways you can put a smile on your own face.

So, what targets are you setting this year? I’d love to hear about them! And if you want to know more about Janine Elias and her inspiring programs, you can visit her website here.

Make 2012 the year you achieve your dreams!

What Are You Getting Yourself for Christmas?

Filed under: General Dentistry — Tags: benefits of smiling, Christmas, Dr. Sand Wall, Erlanger dentistry — admin @ 1:55 pm

We all know that Christmas is about buying gifts for others, but sometimes it can be nice to give yourself a little present, too, one that can keep giving all year long.

What might such a present look like? Look no further than your own smile!

Your smile can be a gift to others, but it can also be a gift to yourself. It’s been shown that smiling regularly can help you improve your immune system, relieve stress, and lower your blood pressure, in addition to releasing endorphins and serotonin, two chemicals that promote happiness.

What’s more, gifting your smile with the attention it needs is one way you can support your overall health, including your heart health. With that in mind, why not include regular dental visit to my Erlanger office in your New Year’s resolutions?

There are all kinds of gifts you could give yourself, though, that would keep on giving all year long. We’d love to hear about what you’re giving yourself and what you’re doing to improve both your smile and your health.

Let us know in the comments section below. And from all of us at my Erlanger office, we want to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Make Your Christmas a White Christmas with Teeth Whitening

Snow at Christmastime always makes time spent around the tree with family and friends during the holiday season that much more magical and unforgettable. From building a snowman to snowball fights and snow angels, it brings a sense of wondrous fun to the holiday. But as miraculous as snow on Christmas can be, it doesn’t always happen.

That doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a white Christmas, though. One way to ensure that your Christmas is a white Christmas, no matter what the weather is like outside, is with at-home teeth whitening from my Erlanger office.

Right now, custom-made teeth whitening trays and professional whitening gel from my Erlanger dental office are only $100.00. So, regardless of whether this Christmas is the kind of white Christmas you always hear Bing Crosby sing about while you’re shopping for presents or trimming the tree, you can still give your holiday season and the upcoming New Year a dazzling boost with professional teeth whitening.

If you have any questions about how teeth whitening works or you’re ready to schedule an appointment, just give my Erlanger office a call. And please share your favorite white Christmas memory with us.  We’d love to hear your snowy stories!

Share a Smile from the Heart with Your Loved Ones This Thanksgiving

Filed under: Thanksgiving — Tags: Dr. Sand Wall, Erlanger dentistry, Thanksgiving — admin @ 3:57 pm

Every family has a Thanksgiving tradition. Maybe yours likes to give back on Turkey Day by volunteering somewhere. Or maybe, Thanksgiving is the one day you get to spend some cherished time with family members you won’t see again for another year.

Whatever your tradition may be, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to take stock of all you’ve been blessed with.  Considering how busy our daily lives can be, finding the time to enjoy loved ones and reflect on the joy you share can be difficult. But Thanksgiving gives you time to do all that and more. Between servings of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving lets you give of yourself to others through your smile, your attention, and sometimes just through your presence.

So, from all of us at my Erlanger office, we hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving. Share your smile with others this season, because sharing a smile from the heart is part of what it means to serve others.

And don’t be afraid to share with us, too! If your family has a unique or interesting tradition, we’d love to hear about it.

Happy Jack-o-Lanterns for Halloween!

Filed under: Halloween — Tags: Dr. Sand Wall, Erlanger dentistry, Halloween, jack-o-lantern — admin @ 7:44 pm

With Halloween getting closer every day, children everywhere are looking forward to dressing up and trick-or-treating.

But Halloween has more going for it than just sweets. For many, carving a jack-o-lantern goes with Halloween like decorating a tree goes with Christmas. Maybe all it takes for you to start reminiscing about your own Halloweens growing up is one look at a jack-o-lantern’s yellow, flickering eyes and glowing smile.

So why not carve a jack-o-lantern together as a family this year?  Besides just creating memories and sharing smiles, you’ll be sharing in a tradition that families have been participating in for years.

How do you get started? Just sit down together and let your imaginations run wild! Think about what your jack-o-lantern’s smile should look like. Do you want it to have that traditional toothy grin, or do you want something sillier or unconventional? You’re only limited by what you can image.

Once everyone’s picked a design they love, you can start carving your pumpkin. If you have little ones, make sure they know to stand clear while you’re carving.

When you’ve carved the top of your pumpkin, why not make a game out of cleaning out the pumpkins seeds. Have a race to see who ends up with the most, or if everyone has their own pumpkins, to see who clean theirs out the fastest.

Once your jack-o-lanterns are done, all that’s left to do is put a candle inside and make it come to life. And while your jack-o-lanterns will only last for this Halloween, the memories you’ve created will last in to child’s adulthood. Who knows, they may even pass on the tradition to their own little ones some day.

What Color Makes Your Smile Pop?

As we head into fall, the leaves in Erlanger are beginning to turn colors. What a wonderful time of year! Cooler weather and beautiful fall colors wherever you look.

I’ve been thinking about more than just the changing leaves, though—I’ve been thinking about how color can make your smile pop. For many patients, what can help is a whiter smile. At my Erlanger office, I can help you whiten your smile with take-home whitening trays and professional whitening gel. When used for about 30 minutes to an hour each day, our professional whitening gel can penetrate through stains, leaving you with a brilliant, dazzling smile. And what’s more, with the Holiday Whitening special we’re currently offering, now’s the perfect time to start to get started.

But of course, whiter teeth aren’t everything. Sometimes, what makes your smile just is a great outfit that complements your smile’s natural shade. Or it could be the makeup you use. Whatever it is, I’d like to hear about it. Let me know how you’re enjoying the fall season and what you’re doing to help your smile look its best.

And if you’d like to find out about our holiday teeth whitening special we’re offering, why not give my office a call? I’d love to help you any way I can!

As School Gets Underway Don’t Forget to Pack Healthy Lunches for Your Kids

Now that we’re well into September, summer’s all but over and the kids are back in school. That means you’re back to packing lunches in the mornings and trying to get everyone dressed and out the door for another day. And with everything you have to do, it can be hard to put a lot of thought into what you pack.

But don’t let the morning rush keep you from packing healthy lunches! Unhealthy foods loaded with empty carbs, sugar, and fat can easily cause trouble for smiles of all ages—problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

Nutritious foods, on the other hand, aren’t a magnet for cavities in the way junk foods can be. They support the body’s health, and, if they have antioxidants, can also have a positive impact on oral health.

How Important Are Oral Cancer Screenings?

The short answer is, very important. Approximately 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. A quarter of those may not have ever touched a cigarette or even taken a sip of alcohol in their lives.

In other words, just because you don’t have any of the lifestyle factors commonly associated with the disease, that doesn’t mean you’re not at risk—which is why annual oral cancer screenings are so important. If found in its later stages, oral cancer can be fatal. But, if caught early, the cure rate can be as high as 80 to 90%. That means an oral cancer screening could literally save your life.
