As School Gets Underway Don’t Forget to Pack Healthy Lunches for Your Kids

Now that we’re well into September, summer’s all but over and the kids are back in school. That means you’re back to packing lunches in the mornings and trying to get everyone dressed and out the door for another day. And with everything you have to do, it can be hard to put a lot of thought into what you pack.

But don’t let the morning rush keep you from packing healthy lunches! Unhealthy foods loaded with empty carbs, sugar, and fat can easily cause trouble for smiles of all ages—problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

Nutritious foods, on the other hand, aren’t a magnet for cavities in the way junk foods can be. They support the body’s health, and, if they have antioxidants, can also have a positive impact on oral health.

How Important Are Oral Cancer Screenings?

The short answer is, very important. Approximately 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. A quarter of those may not have ever touched a cigarette or even taken a sip of alcohol in their lives.

In other words, just because you don’t have any of the lifestyle factors commonly associated with the disease, that doesn’t mean you’re not at risk—which is why annual oral cancer screenings are so important. If found in its later stages, oral cancer can be fatal. But, if caught early, the cure rate can be as high as 80 to 90%. That means an oral cancer screening could literally save your life.

How Are You Staying Cool With a Smile This Summer?

Filed under: Misc. — Tags: staying cool, summer, summer fun, summertime fun — admin @ 1:49 pm

Summer is moving along fast, and even though it’s hot outside—hotter than it’s been around here in a long time—there are plenty of ways to create smiles and beat the heat.

One classic way is with a heaping bowl of ice cream. Or, if you have kids, how about a contest to see who can get the bluest Popsicle tongue? That may sound like unorthodox advice coming from a dentist, but everyone needs a treat every now and then, right?

And of course, nothing can help you stay cool quite as nicely as some time in the pool, whether you just want to splash around or whether you like to get your exercise by swimming laps.

But summer isn’t just about looking forward to staying cool at home. It’s also about having a chance to escape your normal schedule for a few days with a family vacation or even a family reunion. Spending time with loved ones , sharing some laughs and warm memories, is a great way to relax and unwind.

So how are you staying cool this summer? A beach vacation? A camping trip in the mountains? A spelunking adventure? We’d love to hear about it!

An Electric Smile Made Even Better with an Electric Toothbrush

You already know how important it is to brush every day. But if you’re brushing with a regular toothbrush, your smile may not be getting as clean as it needs to be. What’s more, you may even be putting your teeth at risk of serious trouble down the road.

That’s why I like to recommend that patients switch from a regular toothbrush to an electric toothbrush. With an electric toothbrush you can look forward to a cleaner, better protected smile.

Root Cavity Treatment for Patients in the Erlanger Area

The type of cavity you’re most familiar with results from tooth decay. Acid produced by bacteria and plaque eats away at protective enamel, destroying a tooth’s structure. But for older adults, your body is susceptible to a new type of cavity—the root cavity.

As adults, we tend to think of cavities as a problem only kids who eat too much candy have to deal with. And while it’s true that too many sweets can damage young smiles, you never outgrow cavities—but they can take a slightly different form.

What Causes Root Cavities?

Two factors contribute to the formation of root cavities. The first is hygiene. As with traditional cavities, poor dental hygiene leads to the buildup of acid-producing bacteria and plaque.

Your Smile In Your Golden Years

As you age, caring for your smile becomes harder to do. Pain from arthritis can make brushing and flossing a chore, if not impossible, while dry mouth—a side effect of some medications—can increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

But problems like these don’t have to keep you from a healthy smile. A dentist with years of experience and a compassionate spirit can give you the gentle care you need. You’ll find both of these qualities at my office in Erlanger.

10 Ways to Work Flossing into Your Daily Routine

You’ve heard it before: brush twice daily or as recommended by the dentist and floss at least once a day to maintain a healthy smile. Flossing removes plaque from between teeth and at the gum line and gets rid of food particles that can harbor bacteria. This simple act can reduce your chances of getting gum disease, a bacterial infection that can deliver a devastating blow to oral and overall health.

Even though most folks understand the importance of flossing, 73% of Americans would rather go grocery shopping than floss. Does this mean that people really like to shop for groceries or that they dislike flossing? You decide. However, the fact remains that flossing is a crucial part of a good oral homecare regimen.

Here are 10 ways to incorporate flossing into your daily routine and get a head start on a lifetime of good oral health. (more…)

Emergency Care from Dr. Sand Wall

You can’t predict when a dental emergency will happen. It could be at work, during the weekend, or in the middle of a holiday. And just like you can’t predict when an emergency will happen, you also can’t predict what it will be.

Sometimes it’s something you can solve at home, without seeing us. In other cases, you may need to visit the emergency room. But if your emergency is a lost or broken tooth you should contact our Erlanger office immediately.

Caring for Your Smile with Emergency Care Tips

Whether through injury or simply eating a meal, it’s possible to lose or break a tooth. If either happens to you, call us right away. We’ll do what we can to help any patient in the middle of a dental emergency.

And what should you do in the meantime?

If you’ve lost a whole tooth, cleanse it thoroughly with water and preserve it, either in its socket or in milk, until Dr. Sand Wall can see you and determine if it can be reattached. For a tooth that’s cracked or brokne, your first step, again, is to cleanse it thoroughly and preserve it. A cold compress should help protect your mouth against swelling.

For tips related to other emergency situations, visit the Emergency Dental Care page on our website for more tips, and for an idea of what kinds of emergency cases we can help with.

Emergency Care for Patients of Northern Kentucky

The care and safety of our patients is our highest priority. If you live in Northern Kentucky and need to see Dr. Sand Wall for help with an emergency, contact our Erlanger office right away.

Nightguards from Dr. Sand Wall Bring Teeth Grinding to a Grinding Halt!

It’s almost summertime, and for many that means an escape from the rat race. But while a vacation can do a lot to cool off your stress levels, you still might catch yourself waking up with a sore jaw, headache, or earache.

How’s this possible?

Because even though you’ve physically taken a break from your hectic schedule, your mind might not.  This means even though you might be feeling more relaxed, your subconscious habit of teeth grinding could still be happening at night.

Referred to as bruxism, teeth grinding is a natural response to stress, and for many patients, nighttime is when they’re most likely to do it. Grinding your teeth can damage your smile, eventually contributing to problems like TMJ dysfunction, insomnia, depression, and eating disorders. You probably didn’t know that a grinding and clenching problem could be so serious.
